Structure of the Maize Ear as Indicated in Zea-euchlaena Hybrids

چکیده
In attempting to trace the origin of maize (Zea mays L.) the center of interest is the evolution of the peculiar form of inflorescence, especially the pistillate inflorescence, or ear. Since Euchlaena (Etwhlaena mexicana Schrad.) or teosinte, the nearest known relative of maize, has a very different type of pistillate inflorescence, it may be instructive to compare the two genera and trace the successive changes that would be required in passing from the Euchlaena form of pistillate inflorescence to the maize ear. Euchlaena and maize cross freely, resulting in intermediate hybrids which in subsequent generations grade back to the parental forms (PL 16). It is therefore possible to present a complete series of intermediates, graduated to any desired degree of minuteness. It should be kept in mind that although we may be able to arrange a continuous series of forms ranging from Euchlaena to maize, these forms may not represent the course of evolution. A study of these intermediate hybrids may be expected, however, to throw light on the morphology of the ear and to explain its evolution, at least in a mechanical sense.

In order to identify the most important traits affecting yield in maize inbred lines and hybrids, an experiment was conducted in Shushtar City in 2009 and 2010 years. Fifteen inbred lines in 2009 and 28 hybrids in 2010 studied in two planting dates, 6 July (to coincide heat stress with pollination time and grain filling) and 27 July (normal condition) using a randomized complete block design wi...

NDOUBTEDLY specific and generic as well as lesser differences may U be largely attributed to differences in the chromosomes. Detailed analysis of gene and chromosome differences between related genera is seldom possible because of sterility and lack of genetical or cytological information. A striking exception is provided by Zea mays L. and Euchlaena mexicana Schrad. Between these distinct spec...

Extended Abstract Introduction and Objective: Selection of desirable hybrids compared to other maize hybrids (Zea mays L.) is one of the methods used to achieve high grain yield in maize. Also, the most important morphological features affecting grain yield can be used in the selection and introduction of genotypes. Material and Methods: This study was conducted to investigate the relationshi...
متن کاملEffect of fertilizer management and the application of zeolite on agronomic traits and grain yield of maize (Zea mays L.) hybrids under deficit irrigation conditions
Drought stress is considered as the most important limiting factor for growing of crops such as maize. Under low irrigation conditions, proper nutrition of plants can improve the effects of drought stress. This experiment was carried out in order to investigate the effect of nutrition management along with application of zeolite on agronomic traits of two hybrids of maize under deficit irrigati...
متن کاملEnhancement of Growth, Inoculation and Yield Production of Corn (Zea mays L.) Hybrids by Using Bio-Fertilizer
Bio-fertilizers are naturally occurring soil bacteria that aggressively colonize plant roots and benefit plants by providing growth promotion. This investigation was aimed at determining the effect of Nitroxin bio-fertilizer application on growth, inoculation and yield production of corn hybrids. An experiment was conducted as split plot on the basis of randomized complete block design with fou...
